Is He with you?

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”)
Matthew. 1:22-23
The Gospel of Matthew was written with the Hebrew people in mind. The word Immanuel is only found in the New Testament here at the beginning of this Gospel. But it is not surprising (maybe it is) that Matthew ends his account about Jesus with the same message: God is with you! His report of Jesus’ life and ministry is beautifully framed with Immanuel. After the resurrection, just before he is taken up to heaven to his Father, Jesus encourages his friends with such a tender promise: “and surely I am with you always” (Mt 28:20). Matthew sought that his readers would embrace the powerful message of Immanuel, from the beginning to the end of his account of Jesus’ life.
Just as his name Jesus is so intentional and meaningful- salvation, Immanuel carries the wonderful promise that we are never alone because He is always with us.
Immanuel in the Old Testament was God’s promise to the people of Judah when they felt threatened by his enemies, discouraged by the fact that his own brothers (the northern kingdom of Israel) were making alliances with another nation to come and destroy Judah. Was God with Judah? God himself offered to give them a sign to confirm the prophet’s message: God will protect you!: The sign was: the virgin will conceive a son – Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14). Christmas takes us to that moment when God decided to fulfill this prophecy. The birth of Jesus is that sign from God to his people, a sign that constantly and softly whispers to our hearts that his very presence is near to us . The manger, the shepherds, the wise man, the poor and the rich, the sick, the brokenhearted, you and I can boldly walk on this earth believing that his protection and friendship is walking alongside us, that He is with us all day long. His presence is so near to us that he decided to make us his dwelling place. He entered our lives to stay and helps us from within to give us the strength, joy, and peace that we all need as we journey the path that he has for us.
Practice being in his presence by taking some time in silence, inviting him to make his presence known to you through his Spirit and Word. Practice being in his presence by receiving every day as a gift, by looking at the universe and reflecting on the power that it took to create billions and billions of stars and to name them and hold them in their place. He is with you! His presence fills the whole earth! (Isaiah 6:3).
Todo esto sucedió para que se cumpliera lo que el Señor había dicho por medio del profeta: «La virgen concebirá y dará a luz un hijo, y lo llamarán Emanuel»[a] (que significa «Dios con nosotros»).
Mateo 1:22-23
El Evangelio de Mateo fue escrito pensando en el pueblo hebreo. La palabra Emmanuel solo se encuentra en el Nuevo Testamento aquí al comienzo de este Evangelio. Pero no es de extrañar (tal vez lo sea) que Mateo termine su relato sobre Jesús con el mismo mensaje: ¡Dios está contigo! Su informe de la vida y el ministerio de Jesús está bellamente enmarcado con Emanuel. Después de la resurrección, justo antes de ser llevado al cielo a su Padre, Jesús anima a sus amigos con una promesa tan tierna: “Ciertamente yo estaré con ustedes todos los días” (Mt 28:20). Mateo buscó que sus lectores aceptaran el poderoso mensaje de Emanuel, desde el principio hasta el final de su relato de la vida de Jesús.
Así como su nombre Jesús es tan intencional y significativo –salvación, Emanuel lleva la maravillosa promesa de que nunca estamos solos porque Él siempre está con nosotros.
Emanuel en el Antiguo Testamento fue la promesa de Dios al pueblo de Judá cuando se sintieron amenazados por sus enemigos, desalentados por el hecho de que sus propios hermanos (el reino del norte de Israel) estaban haciendo alianzas con otra nación para venir y destruir a Judá. ¿Estaba Dios con Judá? Dios mismo se ofreció a darles una señal para confirmar el mensaje del profeta: ¡Dios los protegerá!: La señal fue: la virgen concebirá un hijo – Emanuel (Isaías 7:14). La Navidad nos traslada a ese momento en que Dios decidió cumplir esta profecía. El nacimiento de Jesús es esa señal de Dios para su pueblo, una señal que constante y suavemente susurra a nuestros corazones que su misma presencia está cerca de nosotros. El pesebre, los pastores, los sabios, los pobres y los ricos, los enfermos, los quebrantados de corazón, tú y yo podemos caminar confiados en esta tierra creyendo que su protección y amistad camina junto a nosotros, que Él está con nosotros todo el día. Su presencia está tan cerca de nosotros que decidió hacernos su morada. Entró en nuestras vidas para quedarse y nos ayuda desde adentro para darnos la fuerza, la alegría y la paz que todos necesitamos para avanzar en el camino que él tiene para nosotros.
Practica estar en su presencia tomándote un tiempo en silencio, invitándolo a hacerte notar su presencia a través de su Espíritu y su Palabra. Practica estar en su presencia recibiendo cada día como un regalo, mirando el universo y reflexionando sobre el poder que se necesita para crear billones y billones de estrellas y darles un nombre y mantenerlas en su lugar. ¡Él está contigo! ¡Su presencia llena toda la tierra! (Isaías 6:3).
