In a Foreign Land
En una Tierra Extraña
When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.“Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”

There’s nothing like the smell of a newborn baby, the softness of their precious skin, their look as they sleep – like precious angels. There’s no doubt Mary soaked in each precious moment with her new, beautiful baby. Scripture tells us that “Mary treasured these things in her heart”, Luke 2:19. At the same time, both she and Joseph experienced fear and much uncertainty. Their newborn baby became the target of persecution and death by king Herod, and bold decisions had to be taken to protect him.
God’s divine protection and control over Jesus’ life is shown in a great way during these first months of his precious life. God spoke vividly to Joseph in a dream, instructing him to flee to Egypt. Think about that for a moment – FLEE to EGYPT?! We don’t know exactly how they took this news, but one can imagine that the journey of hundreds of miles was not an easy one for a family with a newborn baby where the means of transportation through the wilderness were not like the ones we enjoy today. Not only did Joseph have sensitivity to understand what God spoke to him in the dream, but he had a great amount of faith, courage, and obedience to God.
From the beginning of he and Mary’s relationship – when God had confirmed to him (again, in a dream), that Mary did in fact conceive from the Holy Spirit – Joseph stepped into the role of leadership over his family and obedience to God. Mary also obeyed God in great ways and followed her husband’s leadership. Imagine the level of trust and belief it took for Mary to follow Joseph from Bethlehem to Egypt with her precious infant baby Jesus, all while continuing to trust the Almighty with the plans for her life.
To go to Egypt was to travel to a land outside of Herod’s control. This action fulfilled the prophecy from Hosea 11:1 “I called my son out of Egypt.” Jesus’ escape to Egypt can also represent the people of Israel. “Matthew’s claim then is that Jesus in some significant sense embodies the people of Israel. He is the recipient, bearer, and fulfillment of the promises made to Israel by God. Egypt also evokes the story of Moses and the liberation of Israel from the tyranny of slavery, an echo that will reverberate even more powerfully in the next prophetic fulfillment.” Eric Barreto.
As we reflect on Jesus and the precious gift he is to us from our Heavenly Father, let’s take a moment to honor and cherish the bravery and godliness that both Joseph and Mary showed during the tumultuous first few months of Jesus’ life. We have lessons to learn from their leadership, courage, and obedience. Is God calling you to leave something or to walk towards something unknown? Are you needing courage and faith to obey God’s voice for whatever he might be asking of you? May the Lord give you the strength and courage this season to continue following his voice.

No hay nada como el olor de un bebé recién nacido, la suavidad de su piel preciosa, su mirada mientras duerme como ángeles preciosos. No hay duda de que María se llenó de cada precioso momento con su nuevo y hermoso bebé. La Escritura nos dice que “María atesoraba estas cosas en su corazón”, Lucas 2:19. Al mismo tiempo, tanto ella como Joseph experimentaron miedo y mucha incertidumbre. Su bebé recién nacido se convirtió en el blanco de persecución y muerte por parte del rey Herodes, y tuvieron que tomar decisiones muy valientes para protegerlo.
La protección y el control divino de Dios sobre la vida de Jesús se muestran de gran manera durante estos primeros meses de su preciosa vida. Dios le habló vívidamente a José en un sueño, indicándole que huyera a Egipto. Piensa en eso por un momento: ¡¿HUIR a EGIPTO?! No sabemos exactamente cómo tomaron esta noticia, pero uno puede imaginar que el viaje de cientos de kilómetros no fue fácil para una familia con un bebé recién nacido donde los medios de transporte por el desierto no eran como los que disfrutamos en nuestros tiempos. José no sólo fue sensible para entender lo que Dios le habló en el sueño, sino que tuvo mucha fe, coraje y obediencia a Dios.
Desde el comienzo de la relación entre él y María, cuando Dios le confirmó (nuevamente, en un sueño), que María de hecho concibió del Espíritu Santo, José asumió el papel de liderazgo sobre su familia y obediencia a Dios. María también obedeció a Dios en gran manera y siguió el liderazgo de su esposo. Imagínese el nivel de confianza y fe que le tomó a María seguir a José desde Belén a Egipto con su precioso niño Jesús, todo mientras continuaba confiando en el Todopoderoso los planes para su vida.
Ir a Egipto era viajar a una tierra fuera del control de Herodes. Esta acción cumplió la profecía de Oseas 11:1, “de Egipto llamé a mi hijo” Oseas 11:1. La huida de Jesús a Egipto también puede representar al pueblo de Israel. “Entonces, la afirmación de Mateo es que Jesús, en un sentido significativo, encarna al pueblo de Israel. Él es el destinatario, el portador y el cumplimiento de las promesas hechas a Israel por Dios. Egipto también evoca la historia de Moisés y la liberación de Israel de la tiranía de la esclavitud, un eco que resonará aún más poderosamente en el próximo cumplimiento profético”. Eric Barreto
Mientras reflexionamos sobre Jesús y el precioso regalo que él es para nosotros de parte de nuestro Padre Celestial, tomemos un momento para honrar y apreciar la valentía y la piedad que tanto José como María demostraron durante los tumultuosos primeros meses de la vida de Jesús. Tenemos lecciones que aprender de su liderazgo, coraje y obediencia. ¿Te está llamando Dios a dejar algo o a caminar hacia algo desconocido? ¿Estás necesitando coraje y fe para obedecer la voz de Dios para cualquier cosa que te pida? Que el Señor les dé la fuerza y el coraje en esta temporada para continuar siguiendo su voz.
